Sarlat, the tourist heart of the Dordogne region
When you visit the Dordogne region, Sarlat is a must-see. This is the unquetsioned pearl of Perigord and is definitely worth a visit.
History of Sarlat
The entire Dordogne region including Sarlat was known for a brief period of prosperity and fortune in the early Middle Ages. After this short period of grand success Sarlat became a low-key town for centuries. There was no interest to modernize or invest in this region. Consequently, the Dordogne remained in its authentic form. This is exactly why it is such an attractive and popular region among tourists.
Buildings in Sarlat
In Sarlat you will also find a large number of city palaces which were built during the Renaissance. An example of one of these palaces is the beautiful Maison de la Boétie which is where the French poet Étienne de la Boétie was born. But also the L'hôtel de Maleville and the Manoir de Gisson are palaces you must go and discover. Those are just examples of houses that have been opened to the public. There are also many grand medieval houses, which are private properties, in Sarlat. For these houses you can only imagine how magnificent the décor and interior is by examining the façade.
Shopping in Sarlat
Sarlat, a 45-minute drive from your holiday home, also has the biggest shopping mall which caters for the entire region. All national supermarkets can be found in this mall. You can also discover many great shops with regional products, delicacies and antique objects. The street is filled with art and artisanal crafts. The countless restaurants and cafés with street-level terraces make this a very pleasant town.
Festivals and markets
In July and August Sarlat hosts a theatre festival. These are very busy months, especially on Saturdays when the market is in town. You can avoid the hustle by visiting the town early in the morning when only locals dominate the street. The street next to the city hall provides access to a genuine farmers’ market where the locals buy their fresh produce.Back to the overview
