Summer activities in Languedoc

The Languedoc is a unique region in France. It is not for no reason a popular holiday area. The nature is beautiful: the Mediterranean Sea with wide beaches and charming seaside resorts and the Pyrenees where you can take beautiful walks. Next to the coastal region there are the vineyards and olive groves, interspersed with authentic French villages. In the region there are numerous castles, the most important of which is the UNESCO monument "La Cité" in Carcassonne. A day at an amusement park, aquapark or zoo is always popular, as is sailing, snorkeling, jet skiing, horseback riding or quad biking.

Tourist places on the coast

The Languedoc coast starts at the border with Spain where the foothills of the Pyrenees enter the Mediterranean Sea. In this southernmost coastal region there are several well-known touristic places surrounded by beautiful nature: Banyuls-sur-Mer, Port Vendres and Collioure. The coast consists of rocky coves with occasional beaches. Further north, at Argelès-sur-Mer, the wide sandy beaches begin. Then come St. Cyprien and Canet, places with a beautiful Boulevard with cozy terraces. The capital of this region is Perpignan.

Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi is a special structure which makes a river connection through the South of France from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. A big problem concerning this structure was its ridge. Around 1700 the construction of this structure started where there was water supply to a high point of the ridge. To ensure that there was always water in the canal, almost 100 locks were  built, sometimes as many as 9 in direct succession because of a height difference of 20m.
