Travelling to Provence
You can drive from the Netherlands or Belgium to Provence in one day by car. From Utrecht, the distance is about 1100 to 1200 kilometres, depending on your destination. The motorways to the south (A7 – Autoroute du Soleil) are comfortable and well maintained. Along the way, there are many rest areas and gas stations, often with a view of vineyards or lavender fields. Those who prefer to fly can fly to the airports of Marseille, Nice, Avignon or Nîmes. From there you can drive to most holiday areas in two hours.
The TGV also offers fast connections: within 6.5 hours you can travel from Brussels or Paris to Avignon or Aix-en-Provence. Once there, a car is useful to explore the villages, markets and nature reserves. You can easily rent a car at the airport. Many FranceComfort holiday homes and holiday parks have spacious parking lots.
What is the weather and climate like in Provence?
Provence has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. From May to September, the sun shines almost every day and the temperature often rises to 28 to 32 degrees. Thanks to the low humidity, the heat rarely feels stuffy. Spring (April–May) is ideal for those who want to walk or cycle, with temperatures around 20 degrees and blooming nature. Autumn (September–October) is quieter, whilst there is still plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures.
The well-known Mistral wind blows strongly from time to time, especially in spring and autumn. This allows for clear skies and beautiful views, perfect for photography.
Toll costs and travel tips
Those who come by car drive on toll roads. The costs are about €80 to €100 each way from the Netherlands. Pay by credit card or toll badge to drive through the gates faster. A good place for an overnight stop is somewhere near to Lyon or Valence. Also, don't forget to check the car for environmental stickers (Crit'Air) before departure, as these are mandatory in environmental zones and cities such as Marseille, Avignon and Aix-en-Provence.
When is the best time to travel to Provence?
The best time to travel depends on your preference:
- June and July – lavender fields in full bloom, lively markets and summer festivals.
- August – hottest month, ideal for sun and pool holidays.
- May and September – quieter, pleasant weather and lower prices.
- October – perfect time for those who want to walk with their dog or see nature in autumn colors.
Families with children often choose July or August because of school holidays, while couples and peace seekers prefer to travel in May, June or September. In all cases, make sure you have checked your packing list carefully.
Local amenities
In most villages and towns there are supermarkets, bakeries, markets and restaurants. The locals are welcoming, but they appreciate it when visitors speak a few words of French. Many holiday parks in Provence have swimming pools, playgrounds and restaurants serving regional dishes. Most parks are also the starting point for various hiking and cycling trails.
Health and safety
Provence is a safe region with a well-developed healthcare network. There is a pharmacy in every village, and modern hospitals are available in the larger towns. The tap water is drinkable. Make sure you are well protected from the sun – especially in the summer months. A hat, sunscreen and plenty of water are essential.
Electricity and time zone
France uses the same voltage as the Netherlands and Belgium (230V) and the plugs are the same. The time zone is the same as in the Netherlands/ Belgium (CET/CEST), so you won’t encounter a time difference.
