Why France remains so popular

France is a country of contrasts and character. From rugged mountains to vast beaches, from lively cities and tourist villages to quiet nature reserves. Within a day's drive you are in a completely different environment where you can enjoy delicious cuisine and the typical French atmosphere.
The French themselves do everything with attention. They enjoy extensive food, talk with gestures and live with passion. This way of life is appealing. It adds value to your holiday.
It doesn't matter if you go to the Dordogne, Provence, Poitou-Charentes, the Alps, the Gironde or the sunny Languedoc , you will always find that typical French lifestyle where enjoyment comes naturally.

The freedom to travel to France

Travelling to this southern European country is easy and enjoyable. Most guests choose to travel by car: flexible, comfortable and ideal for families.
By car - French motorways are extremely well maintained. With a toll badge , you can drive smoothly through the péage without stopping. Read more about the toll roads and toll badge in France.
More and more cities with environmental zones require an environmental sticker (Crit'Air vignette). This is mandatory in Paris, Lyon and Bordeaux, among others. You can read more about this on the page environmental sticker in France.
By plane - If you want to travel quickly, fly directly to Bordeaux, Marseille, Toulouse or Nice. You can be there within an hour and a half. More information can be found on 5 reasons to go by plane.
By train - The TGV will take you from Brussels or Paris to the south in record time. You can get off in Avignon, Bordeaux or even at the Mediterranean Sea – ideal for a relaxed start to your holiday.

France through the seasons

France is a country for every season. Each quarter has its own colours, scents and rhythm – and each season offers something unique for those staying in a holiday home.

Spring (March – May)

The temperature rises to an average of 18–22 °C. Flower fields color the landscape, rivers flow full of life and villages celebrate the beginning of the market period. This is the season of hiking in the Poitou-Charentes, cycling in Provence and wine tasting.
In the Dordogne, the apple trees are in bloom, in Provence the lavender is turning a soft purple, and in the Alps there is still a layer of snow on the peaks.

View our holiday homes with private pool and enjoy cooling off in your own garden.

Summer (June – August)

Summer in France means sunshine, the scent of thyme, barbecues and starry nights. Average temperatures range from 27 °C inland to 32 °C on the south coast. Markets are full of local produce, festivals are in full swing, and outdoor life at its best. Children splash around in the pool, parents enjoy wine and company. Villages are alive until late in the evening.

Autumn (September – November)

After the hustle and bustle, silence returns. The days are still warm (22–26 °C on average), nature is changing colour and winegrowers are bringing in their harvests. This is the season of truffles, chestnuts and cozy dining.
For many, this is the most beautiful time of the year: authentic, relaxed and culinary. For cycling, you will find the most beautiful cycling routes on France Vélo Tourisme.

Go on holiday during French public holiday

Those who really want to experience a country should visit said country during a public holiday. The French like to celebrate, and everywhere it is bustling with music, markets and fireworks.

July 14 – Fête Nationale
On 14th of July, France celebrates its national holiday. Towns and villages are decorated with flags, brass bands parade through the streets and in the evening there are fireworks above castles and squares. In villages such as Sarlat or Lorgues, people eat at long tables and dance until midnight.
Staying in a holiday home makes it even more enjoyable: you can join in the celebrations, but then retreat to your own peaceful surroundings.

Other public holidays
France has many holidays, for more information see public holidays in France

  • 1 May (Labour Day): markets and flower sales (lily of the valley as a symbol of good luck).
  • 15 August (Assumption Day): many village festivals in the South of France.
