The 10 most famous and beautiful markets in the Dordogne-Lot

During your stay in the Dordogne-Lot, you will have plenty of choice of markets full of atmosphere, colour and scent. Whether you like local produce, antiques or just French village life, you will find markets that are worth exploring. Here's a look at the ten markets that are the most popular – each with its own distinct character, from charming village squares to lively city centres. One of the guests of the holiday park told the manager: " We visited several markets from this overview, and it was well worth it!".

1. Sarlat-la-Canéda (23 km)

The market of Sarlat is one of the most beautiful in France. Every Wednesday and Saturday, the Old Town fills up with dozens of stalls selling cheeses, truffles, spices, and wine. The medieval setting with sandstone facades, narrow alleys and plane trees gives the square a cinematic atmosphere. In winter, the market becomes smaller but more intimate, with the scent of warm chestnuts and truffle oil in the air. In December, there is an enchanting Christmas market.

2. Martel (10 km)

Martel, also known as the "city of seven towers", has a lively market on Wednesdays and Saturdays where the village square comes alive. Here you can taste cheese from the farmer, honey from the beekeeper and walnuts from the local grower. The atmosphere is friendly and village-like, with music, coffee on the terrace and sometimes even an accordionist. Martel is also a short distance from Domaine de Lanzac – ideal for a morning outing.

3. Souillac (5 km)

The Friday and Saturday morning market of Souillac are popular with residents and holidaymakers alike. The smell of fresh bread and chicken on a spit lures visitors to the square near the church. In the summer months, Souillac regularly transforms into a festive night market with live music, food stalls and wine tastings. For guests of the holiday park FranceComfort Domaine de Lanzac, this is the closest and most atmospheric market.

4. Gourdon (15 km)

Gourdon is a charming medieval town with a market that takes place every Saturday morning. The narrow streets lead to a square full of colour, smell and sound. Farmers sell vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. The market also sells delicious local cheeses – perfect to enjoy with your lunch at your

5. Rocamadour (17 km)

The famous pilgrimage site of Rocamadour attracts visitors from all over the world. The summer markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays offer a mix of craft and gastronomy: goat's cheese (Rocamadour AOP), honey, walnuts and wine. In the evenings, the city is beautifully illuminated, and during the evening markets in July and August, live music can be heard between the rocks. Tasting tip: At Rocamadour market buy the goat’s cheese with this same name. This soft, round cheese has a protected designation of origin (AOP) and tastes best with honey.

6. Domme (27 km)

Domme is located high above the Dordogne valley, and that view alone makes the Thursday morning market special. Under the plane trees are stalls full of lavender soap, truffle products and handicrafts. The smell of fresh crêpes fills the air while you enjoy a panorama view over the river. Ideal to combine with a walk through the village or a visit to the caves of Domme. You can easily drive there from your holiday home in Dordogne.

7. Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne (30 km)

On the banks of the Dordogne River lies the picturesque Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, stalls are set up along the quay, selling cheese, bread, wine and local products. In the summer, night markets take place here, with the water gently glistening in the evening light and live music playing from the square.
Tip: After you have visited the market in the morning, you can go to the river with your family in the afternoon. Check in advance which types of water sports are possible. Your children will certainly enjoy a canoe trip. By combining these two activities, you will be able to experience a varied day for the whole family.

8. Gramat (30 km)

The Thursday market of Gramat is a proper farmer's market. Here you will be able to buy vegetables, meat, honey and cheese directly from the producer. The atmosphere is authentic and rural. Combine a visit with a walk in the Parc Animalier or a drive to Rocamadour.

Evening markets: food, music and French fun

When the sun sets behind the hills of the Dordogne-Lot, another world awakens: that of the evening markets, the marchés gourmands. Long wooden tables appear in the village squares, the smell of grilled meat and garlic fills the air, children run between the stalls playing, and music sounds everywhere.

These markets are a feast for all the senses — eating, talking, tasting and dancing. You can buy your food at the stalls: a plate of magret de canard, fries with truffle oil, a piece of Rocamadour cheese or a salad of fresh tomatoes and walnuts. You grab a carafe of local wine, join the villagers and eat together under the starry sky.

  • Domme (Thursday evening) – romantic evening with views over the Dordogne valley.
  • Rocamadour (Saturday evening) – atmospheric, with illuminated rocks as a backdrop
  • Cazals (Sunday night) – small but charming, with craft beer and live music.
  • Salignac-Eyvigues (Wednesday evening) – atmospheric village festival with regional dishes.

For families, these markets are ideal: children play safely in the square, adults enjoy food and music, and the evening often ends with dancing. Afterwards, you will return to your luxury holiday home in the Dordogne-Lot with private pool.

Seasonal and themed markets: from truffles to Christmas

In addition to the weekly markets, the Dordogne-Lot hosts special seasonal markets throughout the year. These markets showcase the heart of French culinary culture. Put these markets on your schedule and visit them from your villa in France.

Truffle Markets

The truffle markets of Sarlat-la-Canéda and Lalbenque (49 km) attract gourmets from all over Europe in winter. The aroma of black truffles fills the air as buyers and sellers negotiate in hushed tone. Some markets even have demonstrations where chefs show how to incorporate truffles into dishes.

Flea markets and antique markets

In summer, there are numerous flea markets and antique markets (such as in Martel, Domme and Gourdon), where you can browse through old paintings, books and crockery. A wonderfully quiet outing for a Sunday morning.

Organic markets

In villages like Cazals and Catus you will find organic markets where farmers sell their vegetables, fruit and honey without intermediaries. Along the way, you will also regularly see signs at farms where you can buy directly from the farmer. Perfect for those who value sustainability and freshness.

Christmas markets

In December, lights appear everywhere in the Périgord in the Dordogne. The Sarlat Christmas Market is fairytale-like, with wooden chalets, mulled wine and artisan gifts. Souillac and Gourdon also have small, cosy Christmas markets with local delicacies.

Sustainability and local pride

What makes these markets special is the love for local production. Farmers bring their goods directly from the field to the stall – without packaging, without long transports. This not only makes the markets more enjoyable, but also more sustainable.

In many places you will find the indication "Marché des Producteurs de Pays" – this label guarantees that all products are local and artisanal. Cheese is made by the farmer himself, honey by the beekeeper from the village, bread baked in the neighbour’s wood oven.

Tip from a local: "Go to the market of Sarlat early – at 9:00 am the truffles and cheeses are best displayed."

Holidaymakers appreciate this authenticity: the feeling that what you buy really comes from here. It's part of the charm of the region – and part of the reason why a stay at a lively holiday park in the Dordogne-Lot is such a rich experience.

Combining markets with must-visits:

Many markets are located in places that are ideal for a day trip.

A few inspiring combinations:

  • Sarlat-la-Canéda – combine the market with a stroll through the old town or a visit to the museum of the Périgord Noir.
  • Rocamadour – after the market, visit the sanctuary or take the elevator to the top of the rock.
  • Domme – combine with the viewpoint above the Dordogne valley or a ride on the tourist train.
  • Martel – combine the market with a ride on the tourist train "Truffadou", which runs on old railway lines.
  • Gourdon – after the market you can walk up to the viewpoint at the castle.

This way you can turn a morning at the market into a complete day full of impressions – food, culture and nature in one.

Practical information for market visitors
